Some time ago I had a short love affair with the music of Yann Tiersen. Most people know him from the soundtrack of Amélie, but he’s made other albums that are even more fun. Tiersen is a master at combining genres, influences, and instruments to create the themes, motifs, and stories in his albums.
That’s a lot of talk to say that re-discovering Beirut reminded me of those days. Heard him before, of course, but I fell in love again after listening to “Elephant Gun”. Which isn’t on this album. But I had to start somewhere with his discography and “Postcards from Italy” is on this album. Postcards is another one that features a burst of instruments all circling ’round a red circus tent made of cherry bubble gum.\
The ukulele fad might have passed, the tambourine is a bit passe as well, that indie-folk style peaked around 2010 but I can’t stay away from it and love it still. This album’s a fun one, well rounded in its themes but not all songs are as memorable. 7/10
