Nirvana – Nevermind – 10⭐

I’m imagining right now. It’s September in 1991, you’ve enjoyed a fresh episode of Seinfeld, went to the movies after lunch to see Die Hard 2 perhaps and, in the evening, after a milkshake and a bit of DuckTales on the GameBoy, you went to the record store and bought an album. This album. Perhaps you just picked it up because you saw the cover and thought it was instantly iconic. Or you heard something good about them on MTV. But you get home, you unwrap the plastic and hope this thing fits with the rest of your rock collection.

And you hit play.

What’s the first song that hits you? “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. You’re hooked, it’s new, it’s got banging drums and the bitchin’ distortion you like but it’s fresh. Not like R.E.M. alternative fresh, not really like a new punk band fresh, but something new entirely. And you know your music experience will never be the same after that.

That’s Nevermind. We take its hits for granted today, we know they’re fantastic, but I have no idea how awesome that first hit must have been in late 91′. An absolute experience. Play it entirely and play it loud, man. 10⭐
