Looking at my movie reviews, you’d think I only watch decent movies or that I like everything I watch. But I can check out any movie, be critical of it and appreciate its strengths even if didn’t enjoy it.
So here’s a post about a movie from more than a decade ago where I struggled not to get out of my seat and run out of the theatre. It should have worked for me at least a little bit. It was directed by Oscar winner Sofia Coppola, it had a real story about criminals behind it, it starred recently-jobless and then everyone’s heartthrob Emma Watson.
But my god! What a crock of shit. Nothing happens. I absolutely mean it when I say this, but the script must have been based only on a newspaper headline: “teens form gang to rob celebrities, wear their clothes and then get caught”. Usually when there are criminals in a movie, you side with someone. Either you relate with the innocent victims or you root for the gentleman thief or you have fun watching a mobster murdering people in cold blood or you empathize with the people trying to solve the case.
There is none of it in this movie. The characters are bland and annoying teenagers. The victims are well-off celebrities. There is no mystery to be solved. There is no fun, no madness, no joy, no action and nothing at stake. Kids steal expensive stuff and are begging to get caught. End of story.
A much too generous 2⭐, for some barely decent music and for Emma Watson managing to get reemployed after finishing Harry Potter.
